Last weekend, EducArte hosted a community engagement workshop with Soles of Duende on Saturday, October 12, ahead of their concert at the Prince George’s Publick Playhouse later that evening. The all-female multicultural percussive trio offered an immersive group class experience on creative expression through migrational dance forms, centering creative conversation through music and movement. They taught foundational movement vocabulary from Kathak, Flamenco, and Tap and guided students in the process of creating musical dialogue with these forms.

Participants loved the teaching structure offered by the artists, especially their ability to include dancers at all levels and convey depth of knowledge in their three forms in a short amount of time. It brought together various members of the DC percussive dance community (including flamenco, tap, flatfooting, and Irish dance) and felt like a beautiful coming together around a shared passion for rhythm!

The workshop was offered for free to participants and took place at CityDance at Friendship Heights in Washington, DC. We are grateful to the Center for Cultural Vibrancy for funding the engagement and to CityDance Studios for partnering with us and offering their beautiful wooden floor studio for this percussive dance workshop.
